Blog Post #9: Changing Cultures

  1. This week, I did not accomplish much. I was planning on making poi this week, but I still need a stone pestle, and I was preoccupied with my history notebook. However, I added a new deliverables tab to the website which showcases weekly deliverables for each month. I also determined which culture I will research for this March. After searching on the web for a long time, I chose the small island country of Barbuda.
  2. Right now I am working on my new culture, Barbudan culture. I have started researching the culture, and I hope to complete researching it by this weekend. Once I am done with my research, I will begin writing on the culture. Since my history notebook is due early in the week, I won’t need to work on it, so I can devote this week to 20Time.
  3. Next week, I want to complete multiple tasks. I plan to start writing about Barbudan culture. I also want to work on determining the item I will acquire for this culture. Finally, I hope to post my writing about Hawaiian culture on my website. If I stay focused on completing my work, then accomplishing these goals won’t be hard, as they are relatively small tasks.
Weekly February Deliverables
February 7: Determine the culture I will research for this month.

February 14: Finish my research for Hawaiian culture                                                       February 19: I didn’t finish my research as I was pre-occupied with other work. As a result, I still need to finish my research and I can’t move onto making poi.

February 25: I finished my research, so I need to finish making poi.

Weekly March Deliverables
March 4: Since I was working on my history notebook, I still need to make poi. I will also determine the culture I will research for this month.

March 11: I will finish half my writing on this new culture.

March 18: I will completely finish all of my writing.

March 25: I will finish creating my item for this culture and post it to my website.

Blog Post #8: Come Poi with me

  1. This week, I nearly finished my March 1st deliverable, which is to research Hawaiian culture and acquire an item related to it. I finished my research of Hawaiian culture this week, more specifically I finished my research on Poi, an important part of Hawaiian cuisine. I wrote about Poi as part of my analysis of Hawaiian culture. Additionally, I finished writing about Hula dancing and its two forms, Hula Kahiko and Hula Auana.
  2. Currently, I am working on completing my March 1st deliverable. Since I have already finished my research and writing about Hawaii and its culture, I only need to finish my item relating to Hawaiian culture. I will make poi and demonstrate how to make it with captioned pictures. I still need to get a stone pestle and buy taro roots, but I expect to have both of these by the end of this week.
  3. Next week, I plan to have my March 1st deliverable completed so I can move onto my next culture. I hope to have that culture decided by the middle of the week, and to start my research by the end of the week. I expect to do both of these as I won’t be very preoccupied with other class work next week. (I hope.)
  4. Deliverable update: My March 1st deliverable is around eighty percent done, as I have finished my writing and research about Hawaiian culture. I only need to work on making poi and documenting it, then I will be done with this deliverable.

Blog Post #7: The (Almost) Halfway Point

Glows

  1. Have you stepped out of your comfort zone? How?

I have indeed stepped out of my comfort zone doing my 20Time Project. For last month’s culture, Sweden, I made traditional Swedish meatballs, and that process got me out of my comfort zone. I am not a chef, and I had almost zero prior cooking experience before preparing those meatballs. Although this made me step outside my normal comfort zone, I would say the experience was a positive one, and it benefited me greatly.

  1. Who were you before this process and who are you now?                                             As I said earlier, cooking Swedish meatballs was a beneficial process for me as it got me out of my comfort zone by making me cook. I would say the experience changed me for the better, by making me less afraid to try new things. Before making the meatballs, I was dreading the entire cooking process, but looking back in hindsight, the meatballs were quite fun to make.
  1. In what areas have you grown in?

I have grown in many areas as a result of my 20Time project, the most significant of the areas I have grown in is writing. Because I have researched and written about so many cultures, my writing skills have improved immensely since the start of the year. Additionally, my technological skills have benefited from this project as I had to create a website, something I have had no prior experience of doing.

Grows

  1. What areas do you still need to grow in?

Although 20Time has allowed me to improve in many aspects, I still need to grow in other areas as well. The area in which I need the most improvement, I would say, is time management. I don’t get as much work done as I would like to, and I get very little work done in class, I do most work at home. I also need to get better at generating ideas for my project. It takes me a very long time to come up with an idea that is solid and fit for my project.

2. Have you stepped outside your comfort zone? Why not?

I have not stepped outside my comfort zone in order to improve in these areas. This is because I have had more important work to do from this class and other classes, leaving me with little time to work on self-improvement. Also, I am not the best at managing my own time, so that is another explanation.

3. What did you do this week and what are your next steps?

This week, I made a revision to my plan for this month’s deliverable. Last week, I decided on making a Lei for Hawaiian culture, but I have now decided to change that. I want to make Poi, a traditional Hawaiian snack, made from mashing a taro root with a stone pestle. I also wrote a little bit about this traditional food. My next steps are to buy the things I need to make the Poi, a stone pestle and some taro roots. Additionally, I need to finish my research on Hawaiian culture. When I am done with making the Poi and done researching, I will be ready to move on to my next culture.

This month’s deliverable: Research Hawaiian culture and get an item relating to it.
